Bichon Rescue, Humane Societies and SPCA

Sparkly7 asks:

Do you know of a good Bichon Rescue? I would like to foster a dog.
I found one but they do not foster the dogs out, they keep them all in one home.
I think that it would be a good experience for Jacques my Bichon.
Thanks.
Kristen

Hi , I was just wondering ... A Bichon Rescue Centre is just the same as a Dog shelter or the S.P.C.A or maybe the R.S.P.C.A in your case (S.P.C.A is in New Zealand) It is ... Isn't it?!?!?!

Hi Kristen --

You can try
Pet Finder and do a local geographical search for Bichons.

Believe it or not, some shelters use this site as an extent ion of theirs and 2 weeks ago we found a female Bichon locally on that site which we took home after all the proper inspections and paperwork!!! More on Kelsey later in another post as she is darling and adjusting as well as us.

Jean replies:

Hi Nikki --
Bichon Rescue Leagues are similar to shelters in that they provide temporary homes for Bichons only lost or abandoned till a new suitable home is found for them.

There is a difference in purpose with a S.P.C.A. and a Humane Society.
The S.P.C.A. will keep a pet for so long and if no one provides a home for it, then they euthanize the pet.
A Humane Society will keep the pet for any amount of time till some one adopts it.

Hope this helps.

Molly Winkles replies:

Hi Jean and Thanks!
I thought a Bichon rescue was something like that I just was not to sure! I absolutely LOVE animals and think it is so sad that they euthanize them If I got my way I would have a house full of pets!!!

Hi there.
I have to agree with Jean. Do not deal with the SPCA if at all possible! They mislead me when I tried to find a home for a domestic rabbit in April and told me they are directly affiliated with Humane Society.
THEY ARE NOT! Unfortunately I found this out too late and they would not give the rabbit back to me. PLEASE DON'T DEAL WITH THEM....THEY ARE A KILL SHELTER...HUMANE SOCIETY IS NO-KILL.

Jean,
We found our Breezy through Pet Finder too! We got her in April and she is such a dear! My daughter calls her the teddy bear dog. She does look like a teddy bear!
She was in a SPCA shelter about 2 hrs from our house, and she only had 2 days left when I found her! She was meant for us!
Good luck with your new addition!

Jean replies:

I took Kelsey to the Vet this morning for a free checkup.

While I was there, the lady from the SPCA was there bringing in some pets for a checkup.
She told me last week, they had 2 Bichons in the shelter that were adopted.

We go every week but did not see them.
I think what they do is they search the list to find those interested in a certain type of dog and call them first. If they take it Or anyone else on the same list, no one else will know or see the dog.

So, if you are interested in a Bichon, then go fill out an application at the shelter. It may be a while before one shows up but if you just want another one, why not?

Kristen/Sparkly7 updates:

I searched, and ended up with two "recycled" huskies! LOL! Sherwen is a blond Sprint Racing Husky and Tyrone is a Malamute/Siberian. I use to have sled-dogs long ago, then I got Jacques the Bichon, and now I have my big boys back. Jacques loves to play with them. Tyrone loves Jacques, but Sherwen ignores him.
