A Dog's Purpose
Contributed by Marenie
A Dog's Purpose - from a 4 year old's perspective...
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.
The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Tyler, were all very attached to Belker
and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Tyler to observe the procedure. They felt as though Tyler might learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Tyler seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Tyler, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.
He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life, like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"
The four-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply, Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God. AMEN

Bichon Poem
Contributed by LindaJean17 (stitched on a pillow):
Hug me, love me, squeeze me tight,
Tuck me in with you at night.
Cry or giggle, laugh, or sigh,
Tell me secrets, don't be shy.
I'm just a little bit of fluff,
But I can handle lots of stuff.
Hug me, love me, squeeze me tight,
Tuck me in with you at night.
Cry or giggle, laugh, or sigh,
Tell me secrets, don't be shy.
I'm just a little bit of fluff,
But I can handle lots of stuff.
If a Dog Was the Teacher

If a dog was the teacher, you'd learn stuff like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy-ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.
When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.
Let others know when they've invaded your territory.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout.run right back and make friends.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.
Stop when you have had enough.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Pet Store Pup
Most pet store pups come from a puppy mill. Often times, the parents of the pup you purchased at the pet store are pups themselves used for breeding. They are bred every season and the conditions they are bred under and live under are horrific. This can actually lead to later health issues for your pet. For the one pup you got, there are many more suffering as well as the parents of that pup (and others) who are being abused for profit.

Cherish your new petstore pup -
Stand always by his side.
Mend his ills and give him hugs
And lots of fun car rides.
Feed him well and let him run
To build his body strong.
Play with him and give him treats.
Love him his whole life long.
You’ll soon become his hero.
He will not ask you for much.
He’ll trade his lifelong loyalty
For your kind word and touch.
Count him among your blessings,
As you are his blessing, too,
But then please do just one thing more
When every day is through.
Take time to look into his eyes
Each night you tuck him in.
I bet you’ll see reflected there
Two other pups like him.
They’ve never had a family,
Soft bed, good food, nor fun.
They live life out in a wire box -
And never get to run.
They suffer searing heat at times,
At others freezing cold,
As weeks and months and years drag by
While they are growing old.
So think about his mom and dad
Who shine there through his eyes,
And remember all the mill dogs
Who are paying with their lives.
If they had ever had a chance,
They’d have grown up like him, too,
With years of love to give and get
Before their lives were through.
You’ll never see them face to face -
Such miracles are rare -
But pray for your pup’s mom and dad,
‘Cause someone ought to care.

EXCERPTS FROM A CAT'S DAILY DIARY:
Day 183 of My Captivity:
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture.
Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded; must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair, must try this on their bed.
Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in an attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was. Hmmm, not working according to plan.
There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary confinement throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the food. More importantly, I overheard that my confinement was due to my power of "allergies".
Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.
I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and maybe snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He isobviously a half-wit. The bird, on the other hand, has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room, his safety is assured. But I can wait, it is only a matter of time.....

Every Dog Lover will Love this --
Notice to people who visit my home :
1. The dog lives here...you don't.
2. If you don't want dog hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.
3. Yes, he has some disgusting habits. So do I and so do you. What's your point?
4. OF COURSE he smells like a dog.
5. It's his nature to try to sniff your crotch. Please feel free to sniff his.
6. I like him a lot better than I like most people.
7. To you he's a dog. To me he's an adopted son, who is short, hairy, walks on all fours, doesn't speak clearly, and hates cats. I have no problem with any of these things.
8. Dogs are better than kids: they eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are easier to train, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with drug using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about whether they have the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and if they get pregnant you can sell the pups.

HOW MANY DOGS DOES IT TAKE TO CHANGE A LIGHT BULB?
Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got ourwhole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb?
Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not upto code.
Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp!
Rottweiler: Make me.
Bichon Frise--- Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light! bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I?
German Shepherd -- I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, checked to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation. (Sounds like a German stall)
Maltese -- What? Why are asking me? I don't do light bulbs.
Lab: I wanna help. I wanna help. Please, please, please, I beg you!
Newfoundland: Let the Border Collie do it. You can feed me while he's busy.
Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture.
Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. And by the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry.
Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark.
Doberman Pinscher: Well, while it's dark, I'm going to sleep on the couch.
Irish Setter: Huh?
Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark...
Mastiff: We Mastiffs are NOT afraid of the dark.
Chihuahua: "Yo quiero Taco Bulb."
Irish Wolfhound -- Can somebody else do it? I've got this hangover..
Pointer: I see it, there it is, there it is, right there....
Greyhound: If it isn't moving, who cares?
Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle....
Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a lightbulb.
Bassett Hound Dog: ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz ... Zzzzzzzzzz...
Cat: Dogs do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So the question is: How long will it be before I can expect light?
All of which proves, once again, that while dogs have masters, cats have staff.

A Dog's Prayer
A Dog's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for the though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the worlds sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And beloved master, Should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew , my fate was ever safest in your hands.
