Lyme Disease which is transfered by ticks (if the tick has been on your dog for a day or two) can be tested for with a blood test at the vet's.
If your dog tests postitive, it can be treatable with drugs for a few weeks.
If your dog needs other shots -- they will be given to your dog AFTER the drug treatment is completed.
There is also a vaccine to prevent Lyme disease. If your dog has not had it, and if you live in an area where there is a chance of getting it, then get the vaccine as a precaution.
Dogs that are kept outside or spend lots of time outside, and if you live near woods, then it may be a strong consideration to get the vaccine.

Flea Medication

There is a Aloe And Oatmeal conditioner that you can use after you bathe the dog and use your normal shampoo to wash your dog but make sure you put this conditioner on after and try not to rinse it out..Or rinse lightly.. So I am experimenting with this new procedure and hopes it works.

The flea control is made by Lilly.. Hope this is helpful to anyone with problems.

Some info to pass along about Flea and Tick Preventative Promeris.
Many report (on various dog related message boards) that after giving their dogs a dose of this, they noticed the following symptoms (collective) -- vomiting, loose bowel movements, disoreintation, gagging, dry heaving, drooling, lethagic, trouble walking, thirsty, not thirsty, swelling, eye issues, to name a few. Most ended up at the Vet's. On some of the dogs, the product worked fine.
Active ingredient: Amitraz (search Google for Amitraz toxicity)
The instructions state that the product should be administered where the dog cannot lick it off because if ingested, it can cause these symptoms.
However, a dog can scratch and the area and then lick their paws/feet and develop this reaction and the product is designed to help the whole body, so it does not matter what they do, the result may be the same as listed in the above symptoms. Get your dog to the Vet if you notice a change in your dog due to medication.
If you do a search of this product on the net, you will find many negative comments so it might be wise not to get it if it is still offered as a treatment. Some Vets no longer carry it.
Also -- there is an email alert making the rounds every now and then, or posted on pet message boards -- this has been posted at Snopes and Urban Legends using various types of dogs as the victims, the same paragraph describing the symptoms, and signed by various people.
Alternatives to flea/tick issues: Advantage, Frontline, Sentinel, and Revolution

Dry-peppermint, eucalyptus, bay leaf herbs, marjoram, rosemary, sage and clove buds-
Crush and fill into a muslin bag.
Place in your pets bed/pillow or add to cedar chip bedding.
Herbal Flea Spray:
Chamomile (can use tea bags of this flavor, seep in hot water for 15 minutes),
From the health food store: valerian, licorice and witch hazel-
Add the valerian and licorice to the luke warm tea.
When cooled, add to a spray bottle with witch hazel.
Lightly spray on the dog.
Air dry

outside, in a dog house if you have one, and on the area of your picnic. Suppose to drive them away and pretty cheap if you buy it in a dollar store.
I intend on trying it for these summer days and nites especially.. In Florida you need all the help you can get. The dogs should have less worries with them not around.

I have two Bichons, both male and two other dogs a Maltese and a white Poodle mix and this is what I do for fleas:
First I buy a huge bottle of Listerene mouth wash and I dump it in a spray bottle and I go outside and I spray it all over the yard, wa la no mosiquitoes that carry all kinds of problems for the dogs.
Then I get Dawn Dish Washing liquid and I bath the dogs in it, if they have ANY fleas it will kill them instantly and then I rinse the dogs well and then I put conditioner on them whatever I have and I DO NOT have a flea problem.
You can also spray the Listerine around deck areas your pools etc and it really does keep the bugs down. and its so cheap!

I am going to call the vet on Monday and ask for something else too maybe. Is it that Advantage just doesn't work on these types of dogs? We have never had this kind of problem with this med before. Fleas - horrible little mites. Have you washed Sandy's bedding and aired her sleeping area?
Maybe she is getting re-infested? Also, do you have other animals that she could be coming into contact with who have not been flead? Maybe try a different brand of flea control.
I use Advantage on Molly and don't have a problem - thankfully, as she comes onto my bed each morning.

I had to switch to Frontline.
Advantage stopped working on my Bichon. Frontline doesn't seem to irritate his skin as much either.
I couldn't use Advantick at all, because it burned his skin. good luck.
Sandy, my Bichon has fleas now. We have been putting Advantage on her from the vet but it is not working at all. Is there anything else I can use, like brewers yeast? I am going to call the vet on Monday and ask for something else too maybe. Is it that Advantage just doesn't work on these types of dogs? We have never had this kind of problem with this med before.
